Fall Season in the Pacific Northwest: My Favorite Time of Year
Well, it’s fall time again. The leaves are turning quickly, the cold weather is coming through, and if you live anywhere near my neck of the woods, the rain is in full effect. It seems like every year the transition from summer to fall season in the Pacific Northwest comes almost instantly. This year, we had a beautiful stretch of warm weather through September and into early October. But almost as if in an instant, the weather changed, the sun was going down quick, and coming up later. I got so used to the bright shining sun traveling with me on my way to work all summer at 6am, I forgot just how long the mornings can be in the fall.
Do I miss summer? Maybe a little. But honestly, fall is my favorite time of year. I love the weather and the atmosphere. We still get occasionally sunny days here in October, which when paired with the brisk cold mornings and the fog make getting up that much better. I love a good cup of black coffee on a cold fall morning, climbing into the truck for the 30 minute drive to work. The air is cold, the heaters are warm and I’ve got my favorite insulated sweat shirt keeping me warm. Besides this, summer is generally a very hectic month for my family. Combine the vacations, family trips, long work days, the boys being out of school, and the long nights and early mornings, and I’m a little exhausted after just a few weeks of it.
Fall season in the Pacific Northwest however, offers something of a peaceful setting that I look forward to every year. Hunting season is well upon us, which not only creates a great opportunity for me to get out and stretch my legs in a bit of woods walking solitude, but also gives me a chance to play with some of the new gear and toys I have collected over the summer.
This year, I am particularly looking forward to testing some of the new 9mm and 10mm Auto loads I have been working up on my Lee Press. Check out my article on the 9mm, it is one of my favorite rounds that I love building up custom loads for. I have been experimenting with some plinking rounds for both calibers and I can’t wait to get out and see how they do. Soon, I will be incorporating a Chronograph into my toolset so that I can more accurately record my loads. I have been working up a system for recording my data that I will talk about in another post that includes my own custom targets. When I have these prepared, I will not only share my data as I collect it, but will put up some targets to download and print at home. Our fall season in the Pacific Northwest however can be quite wet, so it may take some time to collect the data and get it categorized into a solid database!
I don’t know about everyone else, but I am very excited about the prospects of this fall, and even going into this winter. I hope to get up to the mountains a bit and do some shooting over the next few months. Plus, it’s always fun to trail around in the snow and explore!

I think I’m more interested in the color of fall I think that’s exactly why it’s such a wonderful season simply because it provides a feeling that is incredibly unique to all of us.
Canada is soo cold! I couldn’t move a muscle when I was there but it is beautiful and worth experiencing all the weather.
Fall is definitely one of my favorite seasons. Here in Canada we have a nice slow fall right into winter (pun intended!) and everything gets beautiful. I love to go out ATV’ing and dirt biking in the mud holes around my property after a long days work then come home to a nice fire and a dinner. Although, I do think I could completely skip over our long harsh winters!
Canada is a beautiful place! I bet your Winters are pretty harsh though. We went through an unusually cold winter last year, and I bet that doesn’t even come close to your normal winters. I’d still love to be up there with a nice 4×4 playing in the snow though. We pretty much just get a ton of rain here, which isn’t always bad, cause it means plenty of mud to play in!
We are so unfortunate in my country not to experience a distinct fall season. I would love to experience fall, I think it will make me more emotional.
Fall is nice for a bit and when you’re inside, but it gets really windy and rainy and depressing, so it’s not all that nice. Fall is my least favorite season because of the aforementioned issues. You could experience the better parts of fall by traveling to some country with a nice fall and good places to hike (like Finland, where I live).
I have to say that I am not a fan of winter or fall. I love summer and the colours with the sunshine and more to do! It is a beautiful time of the year though, when the leaves are falling off the trees and you get to make a fire, dress into your outdoor thermals and try out the new tent for waterproofing purposes.
I agree totally. Winter is pretty nice though, with all the winter sports here in my country. I still get sick of it pretty fast. Nothing beats the silence after the first snow when you just walk around in the perfect silence and there’s snow everywhere. Makes you feel warm inside even though it’s cold outside. Fall looks good and after a rain it feels really fresh, but crappy weather is pretty depressing, and crappy weather is pretty much everything fall has going on for it.
Fall is one of my favorite seasons as well! Where I live, its like it changes from Summer to Fall in the blink of an eye. One minute it can be 70 degrees and then by the time night has fallen its turned to 40 degrees. That Arkansas weather. We do a lot of target practice in our house, it has been raining lately and we are both itching for the weather to clear up soon! Good luck with the data!
The weather definitely changes quickly, but it’s the time of year I always look forward too!
