5.75mm Velo Dog

Summary

The 5.5mm Velo-Dog (AKA: 5.75mm Velo Dog) is a Center Fire cartridge with a Bullet Diameter of 0.225 in” (5.72mm) that is primarily used in Pistols. The 5.5mm Velo-Dog originated in France in 1894. The 5.5mm Velo-Dog also has a case length of 1.12 in” (28.45mm) and an overall length of 1.35 in” (34.29mm).

Notes

The 5.5mm Velo-Dog is the primary cartridge for the original Velo-Dog revolver, a small pocket sized pistol created in France for use as personal carry firearm to protect against attacks. The 5.5mm Velo-Dog is also known as the 5.75mm Velo-Dog, although the cartridge itself actually measures 5.5mm (.216″) making it slightly smaller and less powerful than a standard .22 Long Rifle cartridge. The 5.5mm Velo-Dog is considered a .22 Caliber center fire cartridge, produced from the late 1900s until approximately the mid 1990s by Fiocchi, but is now considered obsolete a possibly no longer in commercial production.

The 5.5mm Velo-Dog cartridge can still be formed as a wildcat cartridge today, however producing such a case would not be feasible from any existing commercially produced cartridges and this would have to be formed from brass stock. Alternatively, versions of the 5.5mm Velo-Dog Revolver existed in the early 20th Century re-chambered for both the .22 Long Rifle and the .25 ACP cartridge, both of which are still highly accessible today.
