.32 S&W Short

Summary

The .32 S&W (AKA: .32 S&W Short) is a Center Fire cartridge with a Bullet Diameter of 0.3149 in” (8mm) that is primarily used in Pistols. The .32 S&W originated in The United States in 1878. The .32 S&W also has a case length of 0.605 in” (15.37mm) and an overall length of 0.929 in” (23.6mm).

Notes

The .32 S&W Pistol Cartridge started life as a popular black powder pocket carry cartridge and came into production in the 3rd part of the 19th century, eventually being adapted to the more modern Smokeless Powders we see today. The .32 S&W Cartridge, because of its small caliber projectile and short case, offers fairly low power in terms of velocity and muzzle energy by today’s standards, coming in well below the .25 ACP, .380 ACP and .32 ACP cartridges, much like the failed .35 S&W Auto pistol cartridge. With an 80-100 grain projectile, you can expect fairly anemic results from the .32 S&W Pistol Cartridge in the range of approximately ~650-900fps and around 100 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. For these reasons, the .32 S&W cartridge is largely considered only adequate for recreation or sporting use today, falling well short of what many consider to be the bare minimum for personal defense use, the .380 ACP pistol cartridge.
