The .32 S&W Long originated in The United States in 1896. The .32 S&W Long also has a case length of 0.92 in” (23.37mm) and an overall length of 1.279 in” (32.49mm).

Notes

The .32 S&W Long cartridge was developed in the United States by Smith & Wesson in the late 19th century and is often called the .32 Colt New Police, a variant of the cartridge that employs flat-nose projectiles and was widely used in Law Enforcement. The .32 S&W Long has largely taken a back seat to the .38 Special Cartridge developed around the same time period, mostly due to its higher versatility amongst a larger range of applications.

The .32 S&W Long is the larger brother to the original Black Powder .32 S&W Pistol Cartridge developed in 1878 for the S&W M1-1/2 Revolver. The. 32 S&W Long cartridge offers slightly better power in terms of velocity ranging 200-200fps faster than most .32 S&W Short Cartridges of the same projectile weight. That being said, muzzle energy is still fairly weak and shows no improvement over the smaller cartridge.

Amongst the .32 Caliber family of cartridges, the .32 S&W Long is interchangeable with several of its siblings and can be shot through firearms chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum. Today the .32 S&W Long cartridge is widely perceived as a recreational or sporting cartridge, used commonly in international shooting competitions. A wide variety of .32 S&W Long ammunition can be found from many manufacturers around the World, even in Match variants, however the .32 S&W Long cartridge is one that highly benefits from reloading and can be pushed to much higher velocities and increased muzzle energy when fired through longer barrels with increased loads. There are currently still many revolvers on the market chambered specifically for the .32 S&W Long cartridge including many Sporting variants created specifically for the use of international competition shooting.
